Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra design leaks: What was Samsung thinking?

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra has been the talk of the town lately, and now alleged renders of the highly-anticipated wearable have been leaked by reliable tipster OnLeaks and Smartprix. One of the most striking features of the leaked design is the dial shape, which seems to be a combination of both round and square. Personally, I find the dial of the so-called Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra quite peculiar. It doesn't even resemble a perfect squircle; it's like a circle awkwardly placed on a squircle.

This is the first time Samsung is experimenting with such a shape for its premium smartwatch. Leakers suggest that the shiny round part protruding from the squared frame is a rotating bezel. Interestingly, Samsung has replaced the numbers on the rotating bezel with grooves, adding a unique touch to its design.

The fact that the main display remains round indicates that Samsung doesn't need to make significant changes to the user interface. This means that users who are upgrading from older Samsung watches will have a familiar experience with the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra.

Another notable feature is the addition of a third button on the device, located in the middle on the right side. While its purpose remains unclear, leakers speculate that it could serve a similar function as the Action Button on the Apple Watch Ultra.

Turning our attention to the back of the wearable, we can see an array of health sensors, including an upward-facing temperature sensor located at the center.

According to the leaked information, the display of the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra is reportedly 1.5 inches in diameter, matching that of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. Additionally, the smartwatch is said to measure 47 x 47.4 x 16.4 mm, slightly larger than the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic due to the added squircle base of the dial. The watch band design and fitting mechanism seem to have been reworked, and the device now features larger speaker grilles.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra at its Unpacked event, rumored to be held on July 10. Only time will tell if these leaked renders accurately represent what the company has in store for us.
