Microsoft is adding AI-powered summaries to Bing search results

Microsoft is adding more AI tools to Bing search. They began previews for Bing generative search today. This feature gives an AI-created top result for user queries.

The preview showed some sample results. Microsoft will link to main sources used by large- and small-language models. There will also be related information sections. For the query "how long do elephants live," a summary is followed by videos about factors affecting elephant longevity. Traditional search results will still appear after the generative response.

If you want to try this out now, it might not be possible. This feature is not yet opt-in for Bing users. It is only available for a small percentage of queries. Microsoft is rolling this out slowly. They will gather feedback, test, and refine the experience before a broader release.

Google introduced a similar tool earlier this year. This was to keep users from turning to AI chatbots for answers. Google's tool had both praise and criticism. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft's version stacks up. Microsoft noted in a blog post that they aim to avoid harming web publishers. This detail is important to remember with AI tools like these.
