Snap's new AI creates Snapchat Lenses by simply describing them
Snap is expanding its suite of AI tools for creators.
At this year's Snap Partner Summit, Snap unveiled Easy Lens. It translates plain-English descriptions into Lenses. Lenses are Snap's AR objects, effects, and characters. Easy Lens uses generative AI in Lens Studio.
In Lens Studio, Snap is launching Body Morph. This tool creates 3D characters, costumes, and outfits from text or images. An image generator for creating icons will also arrive. Hundred of animations for Bitmoji are coming too, with a blending feature.
Snap plans more generative capabilities for Lens Studio. Features like custom animation creation and 3D asset reconstruction from videos will be added.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel highlighted their AI investments. Spiegel sees generative AI as key to Snap's growth. He noted AI Lenses are some of the most used on Snapchat. On-device models will enhance these experiences with faster generation and lower costs.
"This year brings opportunities to improve identity preservation in generative Snaps," Spiegel wrote. "We aim to enable generative video experiences and reinterpret Snapchat Memories."
The number of creators publishing Lenses reached 375,000 this month, up from 330,000 in November. The total number of Lenses rose from 3.5 million to 4 million on Snapchat, websites, mobile apps, and Spectacles.
Snap faces performance pressure. Q3 earnings fell below market estimates, partly due to a weak ad market. Snap lost over $4.6 billion in market value in a single August day as shares plummeted.
In his memo, Spiegel mentioned exploring new avenues for generative AI. Snap plans to test new ad formats and a simplified version of the Snapchat app to attract advertisers.
